In early 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began investigating an increased number of reports of Fusarium keratitis, a rare eye infection that occurs in the general population as well as in contact lens wearers. This investigation did lead to the recall of one lens care product, not manufactured by CIBA VISION.

Based on discussions with health authorities, CIBA VISION is confident that our lens care products were not linked to the increased number of reported cases. Additionally, since the initial reports of increasing numbers of cases in late 2005, the few incidents of fungal keratitis reported to CIBA VISION involved patients who wore CIBA VISION lenses, but used a competitor’s lens care solution.

As part of our ongoing commitment to healthy eyes, CIBA VISION continues to monitor the situation closely. We are dedicated to supplying high quality lenses and lens care to eye care professionals and patients worldwide and we stand behind the safety and effectiveness of all our products.

According to a recent CDC report on May 5th, the risk of getting fungal keratitis from contact lenses remains extremely low. For more than 35 years, soft contacts lenses have proven to be a safe and effective vision correction option when properly worn and cared for, as recommended by eye care practitioners and the instructions included with lens care products.
