Reduce the Risk for Infection

The eye health of patients is CIBA VISION’s top priority, and we want contact lens wearers to know that following their eye care professional’s, as well as the manufacturer’s, instructions and properly caring for and cleaning and disinfecting their lenses as directed by their eye care professional, is the best defense against infection. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a list of recommendations on their web site, www.epa.gov, that include:
  • Practice good personal hygiene when handling your contact lenses.
  • Clean, rinse, and disinfect lenses with commercially made sterile solutions before placing them in the eyes.
  • Clean lens cases with commercially made sterile solutions.
  • Don’t use tap water, homemade solutions, and other non-sterile solutions to disinfect and store contacts.
  • Don’t wet lenses with saliva.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions in rinsing and storing contact lenses.
  • Don’t swim while wearing your contacts.
  • Don’t trade, share, or borrow another person’s lenses.
  • Replace lenses and lens cases as often as possible.
  • Only wear contact lenses prescribed by an eye care professional.

On May 25, 2007, in response to information received from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) initiated an immediate and voluntary recall of its Complete MoisturePlus® (multi-purpose) contact lens solutions. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), analysis of the reported use of contact lens solution brands other than Complete MoisturePlus did not reveal any statistically significant association with Acanthamoeba. CIBA VISION continually gathers and monitors complaint data through our global tracking system and has not seen an unusual occurrence of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) in association with our lens or lens care products.

CIBA VISION has an effective and outstanding lens care portfolio available with Clear Care® and SOLOCARE AQUA™ Multi-Purpose Solution, to clean and disinfect soft contact lenses with a high level of efficacy in killing common germs and bacteria, when used according to label instructions as well as instructions from eye care professionals. Laboratory testing showed that both Clear Care and SOLOCARE AQUA are effective against the active form (trophozoite) of Acanthamoeba. Clear Care is also effective against the dormant (cyst) form of Acanthamoeba. Additionally, when used with
SOLOCARE AQUA, the MicroBlock® lens case, which is infused with an antimicrobial agent, is clinically-proven to reduce lens case contamination. (The MicroBlock lens case should not be used by persons who are allergic to silver or other metals.)
